World’s Rarest Big Cat: Critically Endangered Amur Leopard
Deep in the snowy forests of Russia and China, a secretive cat moves like a ghost. This is the Amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis), the rarest big cat on Earth. Sadly, only less than 60 remain in the wild, putting them at risk of extinction. Amur leopards are a “critically endangered”, which means they are in serious danger of disappearing from the wild forever.
These sleek, spotted predators weigh 70 to 105 pounds and are built for survival. They can sprint up to 37 miles per hour, leap 10 feet high and 20 feet across, and silently stalk prey in the dense forest. As solitary and nocturnal hunters, they rely on their keen senses and agility to survive. In the wild, they typically live 10-15 years, but in captivity, they can reach 20 years.

Why Is the Amur Leopard Critically Endangered?
Losing Their Home – Amur Leopards are critically endangered because people are cutting down forests to build roads and farms. This leaves leopards with fewer places to live and hunt.

Poaching – Some people kill Amur leopards for their beautiful fur, which is illegal but still happens. Others hunt the deer and boars that leopards need to survive.
Wildfires & Climate Change – Rising temperatures and more frequent wildfires are damaging their habitat.
Humans vs. Leopards – As humans move closer to the leopard’s land, conflicts happen. Farmers sometimes kill leopards to protect their animals.
How People Are Helping
Creating Safe Parks – Russia has made a huge nature reserve called Land of the Leopard National Park to protect these critically endangered cats.
Stopping Poachers – Rangers and laws help keep leopards safe from illegal hunting.
Tracking & Breeding – Scientists use cameras and GPS collars to study leopards and help them survive. Some are even being raised in captivity to boost their numbers.
